Notes

^ The Khoi, Nama and San languages languages, South African Sign Language, German, Greek, Gujarati, Hindi, Portuguese, Tamil, Telegu, Urdu, Arabic, Hebrew, Sanskrit and "other languages used for religious purposes in South Africa" have a special status (Chapter 1, Article 6 of the South African Constitution). ^ The Census 2011 household questionnaire describes the groups shown here as population groups, asking in respect of each household member "How would (name) describe him/herself in terms of population group?".
